Hurghada is the answer to a specific family problem: it is February, everyone is pale and fed up, and you want warm sea without a long-haul flight. Four to five hours from most of Europe puts you on a coast where the water is clear, the reef starts a few metres from the sand and all-inclusive costs a fraction of what the same week costs in Spain. The resorts here compete on water parks, so slides are absurdly plentiful, and the sea is calm, shallow and free of jellyfish. It is not a subtle destination: outside the hotel gates there is desert, a busy town and a hard sell in the souk, and most families spend the week inside the resort. Go knowing that, and it is one of the best value winter weeks in reach.

Family things to do in Hurghada
Snorkel the house reef
Several Hurghada hotels have a jetty that walks you over the sand to the reef edge, where clownfish and parrotfish appear within minutes. Take your own child-sized mask, the hire kit rarely seals on a small face.
Giftun Island boat day
Boats leave the New Marina each morning for Orange Bay and Mahmya beach on Giftun. Pick a small boat with a fixed return time, and take motion sickness tablets: the crossing can be choppy.
Hurghada Grand Aquarium
Air-conditioned, walkable in an hour and a genuine relief on a very hot afternoon. It works for children too small to snorkel and shows them what is out there.
Makadi Water World
The biggest slide park on the coast, around fifty slides with roughly half of them built at child scale. Free for guests of the Madinat Makadi hotels, ticketed for everyone else.

When should we go with children?
October to April is the sweet spot: warm days, bearable sun and a sea around 22 to 24C. July and August regularly pass 40C, which is genuinely too much for small children even with a pool.
How do we avoid the famous upset stomach?
Bottled water only, including for brushing teeth, no ice outside the resort, skip pre-cut fruit and salads on the buffet for the first days, and wash hands before every meal. Pack rehydration sachets and a children's antidiarrhoeal from home, they are the two things you will not want to hunt for at 2am.
Are there jellyfish, and do we need water shoes?
Jellyfish are rare here, which is a real advantage over the Mediterranean. Water shoes are still essential: the shoreline has coral fragments and sea urchins on the rocky patches, and a cut foot on day one ruins the week.
Do we have to stay inside the resort?
No, but most families largely do. Hurghada town, the Mamsha promenade and the marina are easy and pleasant with children. The souk is a different experience: expect persistent sellers who will engage the children directly, agree taxi prices before getting in, and carry small notes for tips.
Which bay should we choose?
With a baby or toddler, stay close to the airport: Hurghada town, Magawish or Sahl Hasheesh, fifteen to thirty minutes. Makadi Bay, Soma Bay and El Gouna are calmer and prettier, but forty to sixty minutes in a coach at the end of a flight is a long time with a two-year-old.
