Almost the entire coast sits inside a coral reef, so the sea is warm, shallow and wave free, and resorts here treat childcare as normal rather than as a premium extra: a free kids club is standard even in the mid range. Add English and French spoken everywhere, no malaria, no jet lag worth the name from Europe, and a hospitality culture that genuinely likes children, and you get a first long flight that pays you back.

Family things to do in Mauritius
Casela Nature Parks
The island's biggest animal park, inland from Flic en Flac, with a petting farm and giant tortoises for the little ones and quad safaris and zip lines for teenagers.
La Vanille Nature Park
In the south near Souillac, where children walk among hundreds of Aldabra giant tortoises and can feed them leaves by hand.
Blue Bay Marine Park
Glass bottom boats float over shallow coral in the southeast, so even toddlers and non swimmers get their first look at reef fish.
Splash N Fun Leisure Park
The island's main water park at Belle Mare on the east coast, with slides, a wave pool and shallow areas. Useful to know, because Mauritian resorts rarely have slides of their own.

When is the best time to go with children?
May to December is the sweet spot: dry, sunny and outside the cyclone season. Winter months from June to September are cooler and windier but very pleasant, while January to March is hot, humid and carries cyclone risk.
Is eleven hours of flying too much with a toddler?
It is a long flight, but most services from Europe fly overnight and land in the morning, and the time difference is only two to three hours. That combination means no jet lag to unpick once you arrive, which is why many families rate Mauritius over the Caribbean for young children.
Are the kids clubs really free?
In Mauritius, yes, as a rule. Supervised daytime clubs for roughly 3 to 11 year olds are included at almost every resort in this guide, and several run teens clubs too. What costs extra is one to one nannies, evening babysitting and, at some resorts, the club for under threes.
Do we need a hire car?
Not for a resort week, and driving is on the left with lively local traffic. If you stay in the north you can walk to villages and restaurants, while on the east and south coasts most families use taxis or resort transfers for the two or three excursions they do.
