La Pirogue is the old fashioned charmer of the west coast: thatched bungalows, big shady trees, a kilometre of beach and one of the best sunset spots on the island. Everything is on one level, which matters far more with a two year old than any design award, and guests can walk through the gardens to use the restaurants and spa at sister resort Sugar Beach next door. It is not the newest or the flashiest, but it is relaxed, well priced for what you get, and Casela park is fifteen minutes away.

Our verdict

The sensible middle choice for families with small children: no stairs, a free club from age two, and a west coast beach that behaves itself. Pick it for practicality and price, not for a design hotel experience.

🛏️

The rooms

Single storey thatched bungalows scattered through the gardens, all on the ground floor with a terrace opening onto grass or sand. Garden family bungalows and beach family pavilions give you two sleeping areas, and the no stairs layout is a quiet blessing with a toddler.

🌅

Sunset on the beach

The whole resort drifts to the sand around six, kids in pyjamas, drinks in hand. The best free show in the west.

Glass bottom boat and snorkel

Included boat trips leave from the beach and the reef here is close, so the ride is short enough for small attention spans.

Is it right for your kids?

👶Great fit

Baby

0 to 1 yr

Ground floor rooms, flat paths and short distances make this easy with a pram, though the club only starts at two.

🧒Great fit

Toddler

1 to 3 yrs

Club from age two, a dedicated splash pool and a lagoon that stays shallow and calm through the afternoon. The strongest age group here.

🧑Great fit

Kid

4 to 11 yrs

Free watersports, glass bottom boats and Casela nearby keep them busy, but the single main pool can feel tight in high season.

🧑‍🎤Works with a plan

Teen

12 yrs and up

There is no dedicated teens club here in the way the bigger resorts run one, so older teens may find evenings quiet.

Parents also ask

Can we really use Sugar Beach next door?

Yes, guests of both sister resorts can use each other's restaurants, bars and facilities. The spa serving La Pirogue is on the Sugar Beach side, about ten minutes on foot.

Are the bungalows tired?

They are dated, with dark wood and older bathrooms. If interiors matter more to you than a flat, single storey layout, look at Long Beach or Trou aux Biches instead.

Is there seaweed on the beach?

The west coast gets seasonal seaweed, cleared daily by the staff. Water shoes solve the rest, and the lagoon itself stays clear.
