Forget the headlines: most of Ibiza is a calm, beautiful family island, and only two small strips are about nightlife. Base yourself on the family north and east, in Santa Eulalia, Es Canar, Portinatx or Cala Llonga, and you get sheltered sandy coves that shelve gently into clear turquoise water, a palm-lined promenade and river at Santa Eulalia, a Wednesday hippy market at Es Canar, and short two-hour flights from much of Europe. Add a boat trip to Formentera's shallow, lagoon-blue shallows, the walled old town of Dalt Vila, and warm, dependable sun from May to October, and Ibiza turns out to be one of the Mediterranean's easiest family islands, as long as you stay away from Playa d'en Bossa's clubs and San Antonio's West End.

Is the Formentera trip doable with young children?
