Europe's warmest, shallowest lagoon, made for first beach days with a baby
🏖️Mar Menor
Spain
Updated 1 July 2026
The Mar Menor is a huge, shallow, warm saltwater lagoon on Spain's Costa Cálida, cut off from the open Mediterranean by a thin strip of land called La Manga. Because it is so shallow, the water is bath-warm and, crucially for parents, there are no waves: you can walk a toddler out a long way with the surface still around their knees. That makes it one of the very best places in Europe for a first beach holiday with a baby or a nervous small swimmer. Add mild winter sun, gentle sandy shores and family-focused resort towns, and the case for the Mar Menor with little ones almost writes itself. It is not a glamorous coast, it is a practical, reassuring one, which is exactly what you want when the swimmers are three years old.

Why it works with kids
- The lagoon is so shallow you can wade out metres with the water still knee to waist deep
- No waves at all, the calmest, safest paddling in Europe for babies and toddlers
- Water warms up like a bath, gentle even for the most cautious first swim
- Los Narejos and other blue-flag beaches have soft, gradual sand for little feet
- Mild winter sun makes it a rare off-season beach break for young families
Best areas to stay
- 1Los Alcázares: the family capital of the lagoon, walkable, with the wide, shallow Los Narejos beach and a promenade of cafes
- 2Santiago de la Ribera: a laid-back seaside town with a long sandy beach and an easygoing local feel
- 3La Manga del Mar Menor: the narrow strip with two seas, lagoon on one side and open Mediterranean on the other, and the biggest resorts
- 4San Pedro del Pinatar: the quiet northern tip, home to the salt-marsh park, flamingos and the famous natural mud baths

in Mar Menor
525 Hotel
A smart, modern four-star in the heart of Los Alcázares with well-appointed rooms, some with connecting options for families. A short walk brings you to the wide, shallow Los Narejos beach, one of the gentlest stretches on the whole lagoon for small children.

in Mar Menor
Hotel Izán Cavanna
Simple, bright rooms, most with a balcony and a view over the lagoon or the pool. Family rooms sleep up to four, and the hotel sits on the narrow strip of land with the calm Mar Menor on one side and the open sea on the other, so you are never more than a couple of minutes from shallow water.

in Mar Menor
AluaSun Doblemar
The biggest resort in La Manga, with plenty of family rooms, many looking straight over the lagoon. Rooms are comfortable and practical rather than boutique, and half-board or all-inclusive boards make it an easy, budget-friendly base for a week with young children.

in Mar Menor
La Manga Club
A vast resort estate above the Mar Menor with hotel rooms, apartments and villas, many with their own kitchen and pool. Family accommodation is generous and the self-catering options suit longer stays, though the layout is spread out and a car or the resort shuttle helps.

in Mar Menor
Hotel Lodomar Spa & Talasoterapia
A relaxed four-star spa hotel at the quiet northern tip of the lagoon, with double rooms, junior suites and a block of self-catering apartments handy for families who want a kitchen. Two outdoor pools and a children's pool sit at the heart of it, and connecting rooms make family stays easy.

in Mar Menor
Hotel Monarque Costa Narejos
A large, good-value four-star a hundred metres from the beach, with 193 rooms, most with a balcony or terrace. Rooms are straightforward and roomy enough for a family, and half-board keeps a week with children affordable and simple.

in Mar Menor
Hotel & Spa Entremares
A comfortable four-star at the quieter southern tip of La Manga, most rooms with a balcony and sea view. Family rooms sleep up to four, and the standout is the large marine spa, seawater pools and thermal circuits that make this a favourite for parents who want a little pampering.
