Dubai is the rare winter destination where the sea is warm, the flight is short enough for one film and a nap, and the whole city is built to move indoors when it needs to. Between Aquaventure and Wild Wadi, Legoland and Motiongate, the Dubai Mall aquarium and the fountain show, you could fill a fortnight without repeating yourself. The catch is the calendar: October to May is glorious, while July and August are an indoor holiday with a hotel pool, priced accordingly. Hotels here are set up for families by default, with connecting rooms, cots and enormous buffets, though almost nobody self-caters and kitchens are rare. Taxis are metered and cheap and the metro is spotless, so you never need a hire car.

Family things to do in Dubai
Aquaventure Waterpark
The biggest waterpark in the city, on the Palm, with toddler splash zones at one end and record-breaking drops at the other. Free for Atlantis guests.
Legoland Dubai
Built squarely for 2 to 12 year olds, with a driving school, gentle rides and a brick-built Miniland, plus a separate water park next door.
Dubai Aquarium and the fountains
The giant tank inside the Dubai Mall is free to look at, the tunnel needs a ticket, and the fountain show outside runs every half hour in the evening for nothing.
Desert evening safari
Dune drives, camel rides and dinner under the stars. Book a gentle family version, the sportier dune bashing is rough for under-sixes.

When should we go with children?
October to May, with December to March the sweet spot for warm days and a swimmable sea. July and August reach extreme heat, so those months only work as an indoor and hotel-pool holiday.
Do we need a hire car?
No. Taxis are metered, plentiful and cheap by European standards, and the metro and tram cover the beach areas and Downtown. Note that taxis do not carry child seats, so bring a travel booster if you use one.
Is Dubai easy with young children?
Very. High chairs, baby changing rooms, lifts and clean toilets are everywhere, hotels expect families, and connecting rooms are standard. The main adjustment is planning around the heat rather than around the culture.
Anything to know about local customs?
Dress modestly in malls and public spaces, alcohol is served only in licensed hotel venues, and during Ramadan daytime eating in public is limited and opening hours shift, although hotels carry on as usual.
