Kefalonia is the biggest of the Ionian islands and one of the greenest, a mountainous, forested place where family resorts stay refreshingly low-key. It is calmer and more relaxed than the party islands of the Aegean, with a string of soft sandy beaches, Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos near Lassi, Lourdas, Skala, that shelve gently for first swims. The island's showpieces are natural: the underground lake at the Melissani cave, the cliff-framed Myrtos viewpoint and turquoise water almost everywhere. Just be beach-aware, some famous spots like Myrtos are steep pebble with a sudden drop-off and are not toddler-calm, so families with little ones are best steered to the sandy shallow bays.
