Lake Garda is the rare destination that works for a three-year-old and a fifteen-year-old in the same week. The southern shore has Italy's biggest theme park, a water park, a safari park and an aquarium within half an hour of each other, plus warm shallow water and walled towns you can explore on foot. The north is a different country: cliffs, wind, windsurf schools and bike trails carved into the rock. Add ferries that turn transport into an outing, pizza everywhere and Verona thirty minutes from the southern shore, and you have a lake that rarely disappoints a family.

Family things to do in Lake Garda
Gardaland
Italy's biggest theme park, with a gentle Fantasy Kingdom for small children and serious coasters for teenagers. Arrive at opening, take a long lunch break, return for the calm final hours.
Sirmione castle and the peninsula
A moated thirteenth-century castle with climbable towers, then a shaded walk to the Roman villa ruins and a swim off the rocks at Jamaica Beach.
Parco Natura Viva
A drive-through safari with lions, rhinos and giraffes, followed by a walking zoo and dinosaur trail. Book the safari for first thing, the animals move in the cool.
Ferry hopping
Public boats link Bardolino, Garda, Sirmione, Desenzano and Malcesine. Buy a day ticket, sit on the top deck and let the lake do the entertaining.

Are there sandy beaches on Lake Garda?
Almost none. The shore is pebbles, rock and grassy lidos, with a handful of imported-sand spots around Peschiera and Lazise. Pack water shoes for everyone, it changes the holiday.
When is the water warm enough for children?
From late June to early September on the shallow southern shore, where the lake reaches 24 to 25C in August. The deep northern end stays cold well into June, so pick a hotel with a pool if you travel early.
North shore or south shore?
South for small children: warmer water, flat towns, and every theme park within half an hour. North for teenagers: windsurf, mountain biking, climbing and far better scenery.
Do we need a hire car?
Not if you base yourself in Peschiera, Bardolino or Riva and use ferries, buses and the Gardaland shuttle. A car helps for Parco Natura Viva and the quieter Brescia shore, but summer traffic on the lakeside road is slow.
