A big estate in the hills behind Garda town, part hotel and part holiday village, with pools, tennis courts, a football pitch and a lot of open ground. It is not glamorous and the buildings show their age in places, but for the money it delivers something few Garda hotels can: room to run. Families with two or three children who need space more than they need marble will find this excellent value.

Hotel rooms plus a large stock of apartments and residences scattered across a hillside estate above Garda. The apartments are practical rather than stylish, but they have kitchens, terraces and enough space for four to five people without anyone sleeping in a corridor.

Shallow pool areas and lawns to toddle on. Keep an eye on the slope between buildings, some paths are steep.

4 to 11 yrs
The best fit. Sport, slides, kids club and enough freedom to feel independent within the estate.
Teen
12 yrs and up
Tennis, a pitch and the option to cycle down to Garda keep teens going, though they will want the car for evenings.

How do we get to the lake?
A shuttle runs down to Garda in season, otherwise it is a five-minute drive. Walking up on the way back is not fun in August heat.
Are all the apartments the same?
No, and this is the one thing to get right. Request a renovated unit and confirm the number of separate bedrooms in writing.
Is half board worth taking?
Only if you really do not want to cook. The kitchen plus Garda's pizzerias will feed you better for less.
