The calmest, shallowest beaches in the Balearics

🏝️Menorca

Spain

Menorca is the quiet one of the Balearic Islands, and that is exactly why it works so well with children. Where Mallorca and Ibiza chase the crowds, Menorca keeps things low-key: a whole island that is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, ringed by soft-sand bays that shelve so gently the water stays shallow far from shore. Cala Galdana and Son Bou open into huge calm bays made for toddlers, boats potter out to virgin coves, the Cami de Cavalls coastal path threads the cliffs, and Ciutadella's honey-coloured old town is a treat at dusk. Transfers from Mahon airport are short, so little legs are not stuck in a coach for hours.

Why it works with kids

  • The shallowest, calmest beaches in the Balearics, made for toddlers and first swims
  • Quieter and far less party than Mallorca or Ibiza, so evenings stay calm
  • Cala Galdana and Son Bou are huge shallow bays you can wade out into
  • Boat trips to virgin coves and easy stretches of the Cami de Cavalls coastal path

Best areas to stay

  1. 1Cala Galdana and Son Bou: the south's big shallow bays, the safest water for toddlers and the top family-hotel choice
  2. 2Punta Prima and Santo Tomas: calm, sandy beach resorts with a gentler, more grown-up pace
  3. 3Cala'n Bosch and Cala'n Forcat: the busier, better-value west near Ciutadella, strong on pools and animation
  4. 4Fornells and Arenal d'en Castell: quieter north-coast bays, some of the most sheltered water on the island

Parents also ask

Is Menorca better than Mallorca or Ibiza for families?

For young children, many parents think so. Menorca is quieter and far less party-focused, with calmer, shallower beaches and shorter transfers, which suits toddlers and first family trips.

Which area has the best beach for toddlers?

Cala Galdana and Son Bou on the south coast are the standouts, with big sheltered bays that stay shallow a long way out. Arenal d'en Castell in the north is another very calm, near-circular bay.

How long is the transfer from the airport?

Mahon airport is central, so most family resorts are 15 to 45 minutes away, much shorter than the long transfers on bigger islands.

Do we need a hire car?

You can manage without one in a self-contained resort, but a car opens up the virgin coves, the zoo, Ciutadella and quieter beaches, which is a big part of Menorca's charm.
