Winter sun, giant beaches and calm shallow water
πͺFuerteventura
Spain
Fuerteventura is the Canary Islands' beach island, and one of Europe's most dependable spots for winter sun with children. Think endless white-sand beaches that shelve gently into shallow water, warm days from December through spring, a friendly camel-and-lemur zoo, and short-ish flights from much of Europe. It is windier than its neighbours, so pack a beach windbreak, but for calm paddling, sandcastles and easy family days, few islands do it better.

Best areas to stay
- 1Corralejo: buzzy north-coast town beside the famous white dunes, walkable with lots of family hotels
- 2Caleta de Fuste: the calmest, most convenient family hub with a sheltered shallow bay
- 3Costa Calma and Jandia: the south's spectacular long beaches, further from the airport but worth it

Parents also ask
When is the best time to visit with kids?
Fuerteventura works all year. Winter is the standout for reliable sun when Europe is cold, while spring and autumn are warm without peak-summer crowds.
Is it too windy for a family beach holiday?
It is breezier than most islands, especially in summer afternoons. Pack a beach windbreak, favour sheltered bays like Caleta de Fuste, and do beach mornings and pool afternoons.
Which area is best for toddlers?
Caleta de Fuste and El Cotillo have the calmest, shallowest water, while the gently shelving southern beaches suit first swims on gentler days.
Do we need a hire car?
If you stay in Corralejo or Caleta you can manage without one, but a car opens up the dunes, Oasis Park, El Cotillo and the wilder beaches.
