Guadeloupe is a butterfly-shaped French island in the Caribbean, and a rare thing for families: full-on tropical warmth where the euro is the currency, everyone speaks French and there is no visa to sort from mainland France. Grande-Terre, the eastern wing, has the calm shallow lagoons and the family resorts around Le Gosier, Sainte-Anne and Saint-Francois. Basse-Terre, the western wing, is all rainforest, waterfalls and the Soufriere volcano. Add warm winters, Creole food and turtles you can snorkel with, and it is one of the Caribbean's easiest islands with children, once you have done the long flight.

Which side of the island for young children?
