The grand address of the north lake, and the one that makes the case for choosing Riva over the busier southern shore. You get a huge park with pines and lawns, several pools including an outdoor one that runs long into the evening, a private lakefront, a kids club and mountains rising straight out of the water. The scenery here is on another level, and teenagers who would sulk in Bardolino come alive with windsurfing and bike trails on the doorstep.
Our verdict
If your family is past the pushchair stage and you care about scenery, this is the best week on Lake Garda. Come in June or September and rent bikes on day one.

Ponale trail by bike
An old road carved into the cliff above the water, wide and safe, with the best views on the lake. Do the first two kilometres with kids.
Varone waterfall
A river falling inside a rock gorge, reached on walkways. Loud, cool and about forty minutes of genuine wonder.
First windsurf lesson
The north lake is one of Europe's great windsurf classrooms and the schools take beginners from around ten.
Is it right for your kids?
Baby
0 to 1 yr
Cots, a bottle service and shaded lawns for naps. The pram rolls easily through the park, which is not true everywhere on this lake.
Toddler
1 to 3 yrs
Grass, space and a shallow pool section. The pebbled lake entry is uncomfortable for small feet, so bring water shoes.
Kid
4 to 11 yrs
Kids club, pools and easy bike rides. The Ponale trail is the memory they will bring home.
Teen
12 yrs and up
The best of the lake for teenagers: windsurf, mountain bikes, climbing and a walkable town with actual life in it.

Is the water warm enough to swim?
The north lake is deep and cold until late June. July and August are comfortable, but the hotel pools cover you the rest of the season.
Can we do Gardaland from here?
It is over an hour each way along a winding lakeside road, so it makes for a long day. If Gardaland matters, base yourself in the south instead.
What is the Ora wind?
A reliable afternoon breeze from the south that makes Riva a windsurf capital. Lovely for sailing, less lovely for a lilo, so swim in the morning.
