Awali sits on the wild south coast, tucked between a long lagoon beach and 1300 hectares of nature reserve rising into the mountains. It is all inclusive and unusually strong on very young children: the Timomo baby club takes babies from a few months old, which almost no other resort on the island does for free. In exchange you accept a longer drive from the airport and a coast with far fewer shops and restaurants than the north.
Our verdict
The one to book if you are travelling with a baby or a two year old and want real, included childcare rather than a paid nanny. Families with only older children may prefer a livelier coast.
The rooms
African inspired rooms with thatched roofs and dark wood, most with a garden or sea view and a wide terrace. Senior suites and the beachfront villas take families of five or six, and interconnecting deluxe rooms are the sensible middle option.

Is the baby club really included?
Yes, the Timomo baby club is part of the stay and runs daily. One to one nannies and evening babysitting are extra, as everywhere.
Does the south coast rain much?
More than the north and west, usually short showers that pass. Between May and December the rain is lighter and the days brighter.

Two interconnecting deluxe rooms are usually better value than one senior suite, and give you a second bathroom.
