Victoria is the unpretentious family workhorse of the northwest coast, and it is very good at the job. The 800 square metre pool is one of the biggest on the island, the kids club sits right on the beach and is free from 3 to 11, and there is a teens club too. Rooms are simple and sea facing rather than luxurious, but the position between Grand Baie and Port Louis makes day trips easy and the price sits below the big five stars.

Our verdict
The value pick among the northwest big names: two free clubs, a giant pool and family apartments with two bathrooms, at a clear discount to the five stars nearby. Accept a narrow beach and older rooms and it makes a lot of sense.
The rooms
Almost every room faces the sea, in long low blocks along the water. The two bedroom, two bathroom family apartments are the reason to come: separate space for the children, a second bathroom, and no negotiating who showers first.

Family things to do nearby
Aquarium and turtle pool
The Mauritius Aquarium is a five minute drive along the coast at Pointe aux Piments, small but a hit with under sevens.
Port Louis market morning
Twenty minutes south for the fruit market, the waterfront and a plate of street dholl puri.
Try scuba in the pool
The on site diving academy runs pool introductions for children from eight, a safe way to test the idea.
Is it right for your kids?
Baby
0 to 1 yr
A fully equipped baby care room, cots and short flat distances between blocks. Babysitting is available with a supplement and 24 hours notice.
Toddler
1 to 3 yrs
The huge pool has shallow sections and the lagoon is calm, but the beach is narrow, so shade spots go early.
Kid
4 to 11 yrs
Free club on the sand, free watersports and a pool big enough to play properly. This is the age the resort is built around.
Teen
12 yrs and up
Teens club, diving academy and easy trips to Grand Baie give them enough. The resort itself is not especially cool, which teens will mention.

Parents also ask
Is the beach good enough?
It is narrower than Trou aux Biches or Belle Mare and the swimming is fine rather than spectacular. If a wide beach is your priority, spend more and move up the coast.
Are both clubs included?
Yes, the kids club for 3 to 11 and the teens club for 12 to 17 are complimentary. Only one to one nannies and evening babysitting are charged.
How far is the airport?
About an hour, sometimes a little more through Port Louis traffic. Ask for an early morning or evening transfer to avoid the rush hours.

Everything is a suite here, from garden suites with a shared pool crescent to two and three bedroom villas with a private pool, kitchen and butler service. Family suites give you a separate children's bedroom and a proper living area, so bedtime does not end the evening for the adults.

Shandrani Beachcomber Resort & Spa
Low rise blocks spread through big gardens, with Beach Rooms right on the sand and larger family options that sleep four comfortably. Interiors are classic rather than trendy, but the balconies are generous and the ground floor rooms open straight onto grass, which toddlers love.

Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort
African inspired rooms with thatched roofs and dark wood, most with a garden or sea view and a wide terrace. Senior suites and the beachfront villas take families of five or six, and interconnecting deluxe rooms are the sensible middle option.
