Hotel Riu Turquoise

This is the value all inclusive of the southwest, sitting on the famous turquoise lagoon under Le Morne Brabant mountain. Riu does volume rather than finesse: 390 rooms, three pools with slides for the children, a RiuLand club for 4 to 12 year olds and drinks and snacks available around the clock. The setting is world class and the price is the lowest of any big family resort in this guide, so you trade polish for a lot of holiday.

Our verdict
The best value family week on the island if you can live with a big chain resort: extraordinary lagoon, everything included, slides for the children. Not the one for babies, and not the one for a quiet romantic week.
The rooms
Standard 29 square metre rooms with a king or twin beds plus a sofa bed, balcony or terrace, kettle and minibar. Family rooms give you more space and a proper sleeping arrangement for two children, though the style is chain hotel rather than tropical boutique.

Family things to do nearby
Kitesurf or windsurf lesson
Le Morne is one of the best learning spots in the Indian Ocean, with a shallow flat lagoon and schools on the beach.
Chamarel and the waterfall
Twenty five minutes up the hill for the coloured earths, the waterfall viewpoint and the Curious Corner illusion museum.
Dolphin trip from Le Morne
Boats leave at dawn from the beach here, and the pods are usually found within half an hour.
Is it right for your kids?
Baby
0 to 1 yr
Not the right choice with an infant: no baby club, a windy beach, a long transfer and a big busy site.
Toddler
1 to 3 yrs
The shallow children's pool with small slides is the safe bet. The lagoon is calm early but the afternoon wind is not toddler friendly.
Kid
4 to 11 yrs
RiuLand from four, slides, three pools and unlimited ice cream. This age gets the most out of the all inclusive.
Teen
12 yrs and up
The kitesurfing scene on this beach is the real draw, and food at any hour suits teenage appetites and body clocks.

Parents also ask
Is this the same hotel as Riu Creole?
Yes, the property was renamed Hotel Riu Turquoise. Older reviews and brochures still use the Riu Creole name, so read both when researching.
Is the neighbouring Riu adults only?
The Riu Palace next door is the adults only property. Turquoise is the family one, so check the name carefully when you book.
Will the wind spoil the beach days?
It shapes the rhythm rather than spoiling it. Swim and paddle before eleven, use the pools after lunch, and Le Morne stays one of the loveliest beaches on the island.

Everything is a suite here, from garden suites with a shared pool crescent to two and three bedroom villas with a private pool, kitchen and butler service. Family suites give you a separate children's bedroom and a proper living area, so bedtime does not end the evening for the adults.

Shandrani Beachcomber Resort & Spa
Low rise blocks spread through big gardens, with Beach Rooms right on the sand and larger family options that sleep four comfortably. Interiors are classic rather than trendy, but the balconies are generous and the ground floor rooms open straight onto grass, which toddlers love.

Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort
African inspired rooms with thatched roofs and dark wood, most with a garden or sea view and a wide terrace. Senior suites and the beachfront villas take families of five or six, and interconnecting deluxe rooms are the sensible middle option.
