Preskil is the only resort in Mauritius set on its own private peninsula, with around 750 metres of beach and water on three sides. It is a four star at a four star price, not a luxury address, but two things make it a strong family choice: the airport is fifteen minutes away, and the family rooms sit in their own zone with a dedicated pool, so nobody shushes your children. Mahebourg village and the Blue Bay marine park are both a short hop away.

The budget conscious southeast option: short transfer, free club, family rooms round their own pool. Come for the practicality and the location, and keep your expectations on the decor modest.

The fifteen minute transfer is the real selling point with an infant. Cots are available, but facilities are basic and there is no baby club.

The family zone pool and a shallow, calm stretch of lagoon on the leeward side work well, and the club takes children from three.

Free club, kayaks and snorkelling straight off the beach. Not fancy, but plenty for this age at this price.

Thin on teen specific activities and evening entertainment. Older teenagers will be bored before the end of a long stay.

Is it worth choosing for the short transfer alone?
With a baby or toddler, fifteen minutes instead of an hour after a night flight is worth a lot. It is also a good first or last night stop before moving elsewhere on the island.
Is the wind an issue on the peninsula?
The southeast trade wind reaches this corner of the island, but because you have water on three sides there is always a sheltered side to sit on.
Is half board or full board better here?
Half board plus a couple of dinners in Mahebourg is the better call. Three restaurants get repetitive, and eating out nearby is cheap and good.
