Jaz Makadi Oasis Resort

The calmer, greener option in Makadi Bay, built like a Nubian village around lagoon pools with a handful of gentle waterslides rather than a full aqua park. It suits younger families and anyone who finds the mega slide resorts exhausting. The beach is a short walk down, sandy at the top with a house reef offshore that is lovely for snorkelling but, again, drops away rather than staying toddler-shallow.

Our verdict
The pick for younger families who want Makadi Bay without the noise and the queues of a mega slide resort. Teens set on big slides will be happier next door at Xanadu.
The rooms
Low Nubian-style buildings in green gardens, most rooms with a balcony or terrace looking over the pools or the planting. Family rooms sleep four and are a sensible size, and connecting rooms are available if you ask early. Cots are free and there is a laid-back, calmer feel than the big slide hotels nearby.

How the KidProof Score works
Every hotel is rated on eight things families actually care about, then weighted by how much each one drives your choice. Room setup counts the most. The little touches break the ties.

Parents also ask
Is there a big aqua park at the hotel?
No. There are a few gentle slides on the lagoon pools, which suit younger children well, but this is not a mega slide park. The large Makadi Water World is a short drive away and costs extra unless your package includes it.
How far is the beach from the rooms?
The resort is second line, so it is a short walk down to its stretch of sand, a few minutes at most. The path is flat and buggy-friendly, and there are free sunbeds and umbrellas once you are there.
Is it a good choice for a baby or toddler?
Yes, this is one of the calmer Makadi options: shaded gardens, free cots, a children's pool and gentle slides. The one caveat is the sea, where the reef drops off, so keep the smallest ones in the pools rather than the water.
Similar family stays

in Hurghada
Baron Palace Sahl Hasheesh
Large, properly finished rooms and family suites with marble bathrooms and balconies, most facing the gardens or the sea. The family suites give you a separate bedroom with a door that closes, which is the whole reason to pay this much, and several sit within sight of the pools. Cots free.

in Hurghada
Rixos Premium Magawish Suites & Villas
Suites and villas rather than plain rooms: most have a separate sitting area, and the villa units give you two bedrooms and a private terrace close to the beach. If you have a baby, ask for a villa on the garden side, where the evening music from the main pool does not carry.
in Hurghada
Steigenberger Al Dau Beach Hotel
Solid, well-kept rooms with proper balconies, many looking over the lagoon and the sea. Family rooms and junior suites take four, and connecting doubles are available for larger groups. Ask for the lagoon side: it is quieter than the road side and you can see the beach from the balcony.
