Xanadu Makadi Bay

This is the one you book when the holiday is really about slides. A 27-slide aqua park, a wave pool and a lazy river sit at the centre of a high-class all inclusive resort on the Makadi Bay seafront, and all of it is included in the rate. The beach is genuinely on site, wide and sandy at the top, but like most of Makadi Bay the swimming happens off a jetty because the house reef starts close in and drops away quickly. Small children paddle in the pools, not the sea.

Our verdict
The strongest slide holiday in Makadi Bay for children who clear the height rules, with food better than the area norm. Families chasing a shallow wading sea should look to a Soma Bay lagoon instead.
The rooms
Bright, generous rooms in low blocks spread through the gardens, most with a balcony or terrace and a big enough footprint for a family of four. The proper family option is a room with a partition or two connecting rooms rather than a separate lounge, so ask for connecting rooms in writing and reconfirm on arrival. Cots are free but need to be requested ahead.

Parents also ask
Is the aqua park included in the price?
Yes, the full 27-slide park, the wave pool and the lazy river are included for hotel guests. Rubber rings are lent free at the towers but run short at peak times, so send an adult ahead to grab them.
Can toddlers swim in the sea here?
Not really in the wading sense. The sand is fine for building and paddling at the edge, but the house reef starts close to shore and the drop-off is quick, so swimming is off the jetty. Little ones are happiest in the shallow splash pools.
Is it too big for a family with a buggy?
It is a large resort and there is real walking between the rooms, the aqua park and the beach, but the paths are flat and buggy-friendly. Ask at booking for a room near the pool zone if you want to cut the distances.
Similar family stays

in Hurghada
Baron Palace Sahl Hasheesh
Large, properly finished rooms and family suites with marble bathrooms and balconies, most facing the gardens or the sea. The family suites give you a separate bedroom with a door that closes, which is the whole reason to pay this much, and several sit within sight of the pools. Cots free.

Rixos Premium Magawish Suites & Villas
Suites and villas rather than plain rooms: most have a separate sitting area, and the villa units give you two bedrooms and a private terrace close to the beach. If you have a baby, ask for a villa on the garden side, where the evening music from the main pool does not carry.
in Hurghada
Steigenberger Al Dau Beach Hotel
Solid, well-kept rooms with proper balconies, many looking over the lagoon and the sea. Family rooms and junior suites take four, and connecting doubles are available for larger groups. Ask for the lagoon side: it is quieter than the road side and you can see the beach from the balcony.
