Uroa Bay is the budget-friendly beach resort that lets a family do Zanzibar without the big price tag. It is cheerful and unfussy, sitting on a long private beach on the central east coast, a short walk from Uroa village. There is no dedicated kids club, but the two freshwater pools, including a shallow one for children, do a lot of the entertaining, and family rooms keep everyone together. The beach is east coast, so the tide swings, but for beach time, pool play and honest value, it is a solid, down-to-earth choice for families.

🛏️

The rooms

Uroa Bay is a lively, good-value resort strung along a 300 metre private beach on the east coast, with 135 rooms including dedicated family rooms. Sea Front, Sea View and Garden View rooms cover most needs, and the larger family rooms suit four. Cots are available on request. There are two freshwater pools, one shallow for children and a deeper one with massage jets, so the youngest have a safe splash whatever the tide is doing.

Parents also ask

Is there a kids club?

No, Uroa Bay has no dedicated kids club or supervised programme. Families rely on the shallow children's pool, the beach and day trips instead.

Is it really good value?

Yes, it is one of the most affordable family resorts on Zanzibar. Rooms and dining are simple, but the beach, pools and price make it a strong budget choice.

How are the tides?

This is the east coast, so the sea retreats a long way at low tide. Swim in the morning, use the shallow pool at midday, and enjoy the wide beach at low water.

Hideaway of Nungwi Resort & Spa

Spread over ten hectares of gardens at the northern tip of the island, Hideaway has a wide choice of rooms, and families are well served. The larger 90 sqm suites sleep three or four with a big sofa bed in the living room, and several categories add a private pool. Cots come free on request, and ground-level garden rooms keep a pushchair easy. Ask for a room near the 50 metre pool and its separate children's pool rather than a far garden corner.

Melia Zanzibar

Melia spans a huge, leafy estate above a long Kiwengwa beach, with a room range that runs from Garden Rooms to one, two and three-bedroom villas, many with a private pool. For families the villas are the star: masses of space, an enclosed garden and a pool of your own where a toddler can splash safely. Cots and highchairs are provided, and the main pool has a shallow children's section. Note that the adults-only areas, The Level and the spa pool, are for guests 16 and over.

Park Hyatt Zanzibar

Right on the Stone Town seafront, Park Hyatt has generous rooms and suites, several of which connect or take an extra bed for a child. Cots and highchairs come on request and there are some child-friendly menu choices. There is no kids club, but this is the rare Stone Town hotel with a real pool and a bit of beach, so it works as a comfortable one or two-night city base at the start or end of a beach trip rather than a week-long family resort.
