Hideaway sits on the northwest corner of Zanzibar, where the beach stays swimmable at every tide, which is the single most important thing to know when you travel with children. It is the island's only member of the Leading Hotels of the World, so the polish is real, yet the mood stays relaxed and family-minded. A big infinity pool, a separate kids pool, a Hide and Seek kids club and a playground give little ones a full day without ever leaving the grounds. For a first Zanzibar with young kids and a generous budget, it is one of the safest picks.

Our verdict

A polished flagship on a rare all-tide swimming beach, with a free kids club and a proper children's pool, ideal for a first Zanzibar with little ones.

🛏️

The rooms

Spread over ten hectares of gardens at the northern tip of the island, Hideaway has a wide choice of rooms, and families are well served. The larger 90 sqm suites sleep three or four with a big sofa bed in the living room, and several categories add a private pool. Cots come free on request, and ground-level garden rooms keep a pushchair easy. Ask for a room near the 50 metre pool and its separate children's pool rather than a far garden corner.

Parents also ask

Is the beach really swimmable at low tide?

Yes. The northwest corner of Zanzibar keeps deep water close to shore at all tides, unlike the east coast where the sea can retreat far out.

Is the kids club free?

Yes, the Hide and Seek kids club is complimentary for guests, with supervised activities and a playground through the day.

How long is the transfer?

About an hour by road from Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, so plan snacks and a nap window for the drive north.

Melia Zanzibar

Melia spans a huge, leafy estate above a long Kiwengwa beach, with a room range that runs from Garden Rooms to one, two and three-bedroom villas, many with a private pool. For families the villas are the star: masses of space, an enclosed garden and a pool of your own where a toddler can splash safely. Cots and highchairs are provided, and the main pool has a shallow children's section. Note that the adults-only areas, The Level and the spa pool, are for guests 16 and over.

Park Hyatt Zanzibar

Right on the Stone Town seafront, Park Hyatt has generous rooms and suites, several of which connect or take an extra bed for a child. Cots and highchairs come on request and there are some child-friendly menu choices. There is no kids club, but this is the rare Stone Town hotel with a real pool and a bit of beach, so it works as a comfortable one or two-night city base at the start or end of a beach trip rather than a week-long family resort.

Gold Zanzibar Beach House & Spa

Gold sits right on Kendwa beach, and its rooms run from deluxe rooms to large beachfront villas with their own pool. Many rooms have interconnecting doors or a sofa bed, so a family of four fits easily, and cots are provided. Best of all for the youngest, there is a shallow paddling pool built just for toddlers alongside two larger pools. Ask for a room near the main pool and beach rather than the quieter far pool if you have small children.
