Gold Zanzibar has the thing that matters most with young children and a mid-luxe budget: it sits on Kendwa, one of the few beaches where the tide barely moves and you can swim in calm, clear water whatever the clock says. The kids club is warm and hands-on, with pizza-making, beach games and Swahili lessons, and there is a dedicated toddler paddling pool. Rooms are comfortable, the beach is picture-perfect and the mood is relaxed rather than showy. It is a strong choice for a first family Zanzibar without the very top price.

Our verdict

A relaxed mid-luxe resort on an all-tide swimming beach, with a rare toddler pool and a friendly kids club, ideal value for young families.

🛏️

The rooms

Gold sits right on Kendwa beach, and its rooms run from deluxe rooms to large beachfront villas with their own pool. Many rooms have interconnecting doors or a sofa bed, so a family of four fits easily, and cots are provided. Best of all for the youngest, there is a shallow paddling pool built just for toddlers alongside two larger pools. Ask for a room near the main pool and beach rather than the quieter far pool if you have small children.

Parents also ask

Can you swim at low tide here?

Yes. Kendwa is one of the few Zanzibar beaches where the tide barely moves, so you can swim in calm, clear water at any time of day.

Is there something for toddlers?

Yes, a shallow paddling pool built just for toddlers sits beside the two main pools, which is unusual and very welcome in Zanzibar.

Is Kendwa noisy at night?

Kendwa has some lively beach bars, busiest at weekends. Ask for a room set back from the beachfront if you have early bedtimes to protect.

Hideaway of Nungwi Resort & Spa

Spread over ten hectares of gardens at the northern tip of the island, Hideaway has a wide choice of rooms, and families are well served. The larger 90 sqm suites sleep three or four with a big sofa bed in the living room, and several categories add a private pool. Cots come free on request, and ground-level garden rooms keep a pushchair easy. Ask for a room near the 50 metre pool and its separate children's pool rather than a far garden corner.

Melia Zanzibar

Melia spans a huge, leafy estate above a long Kiwengwa beach, with a room range that runs from Garden Rooms to one, two and three-bedroom villas, many with a private pool. For families the villas are the star: masses of space, an enclosed garden and a pool of your own where a toddler can splash safely. Cots and highchairs are provided, and the main pool has a shallow children's section. Note that the adults-only areas, The Level and the spa pool, are for guests 16 and over.

Park Hyatt Zanzibar

Right on the Stone Town seafront, Park Hyatt has generous rooms and suites, several of which connect or take an extra bed for a child. Cots and highchairs come on request and there are some child-friendly menu choices. There is no kids club, but this is the rare Stone Town hotel with a real pool and a bit of beach, so it works as a comfortable one or two-night city base at the start or end of a beach trip rather than a week-long family resort.
