Gold Zanzibar has the thing that matters most with young children and a mid-luxe budget: it sits on Kendwa, one of the few beaches where the tide barely moves and you can swim in calm, clear water whatever the clock says. The kids club is warm and hands-on, with pizza-making, beach games and Swahili lessons, and there is a dedicated toddler paddling pool. Rooms are comfortable, the beach is picture-perfect and the mood is relaxed rather than showy. It is a strong choice for a first family Zanzibar without the very top price.

Gold sits right on Kendwa beach, and its rooms run from deluxe rooms to large beachfront villas with their own pool. Many rooms have interconnecting doors or a sofa bed, so a family of four fits easily, and cots are provided. Best of all for the youngest, there is a shallow paddling pool built just for toddlers alongside two larger pools. Ask for a room near the main pool and beach rather than the quieter far pool if you have small children.

Right on the Stone Town seafront, Park Hyatt has generous rooms and suites, several of which connect or take an extra bed for a child. Cots and highchairs come on request and there are some child-friendly menu choices. There is no kids club, but this is the rare Stone Town hotel with a real pool and a bit of beach, so it works as a comfortable one or two-night city base at the start or end of a beach trip rather than a week-long family resort.
