Roses sits at the top of the Costa Brava in a wide, sheltered bay, and the water here is noticeably calmer than further south. This one is set in real gardens in the Santa Margarida district, a two minute walk from the sand across one quiet road, with two pools including a fenced shallow one and a free mini club in season. It is the sensible, leafy, mid-price choice for families with a toddler in tow.

The best all-round mid-price base for a family with a toddler on the northern Costa Brava. Calm bay, shaded gardens, and a fenced baby pool.
The rooms
Low-rise garden buildings with family rooms and a good number of connecting doubles, which is the useful bit: two rooms, one door between them, everybody sleeps. Ask for a ground-floor room opening onto the lawn if you have a crawler. Cots are free and there is a fridge in every room.

Empuriabrava canal boat
Ten minutes away, Europe's biggest residential marina runs slow boat tours past the waterfront houses. Toddlers love the ducks, older kids love the seaplanes overhead.
Cami de ronda to Cala Canyelles
The coastal footpath east out of Roses reaches a string of small coves in under an hour, with handrails on the exposed sections.
Dali house at Portlligat
Half an hour over the hill in Cadaques, a genuinely strange house full of stuffed animals and odd rooms. Book the timed slot in advance.

Can we get connecting rooms?
Yes, a number of doubles connect, but they are not guaranteed online. Book direct or email the hotel and ask for a connecting pair in the garden building.
Do we need a car in Roses?
Not to reach the beach or the mini club, but a car opens up Cadaques, Empuriabrava, the Dali museum in Figueres and the Empuries Roman ruins.
Is the Tramuntana wind a problem?
It can blow hard for a day or two, mostly outside high summer. When it does, swap the beach for the pool, which sits sheltered behind the buildings.
