Tossa is the prettiest of the big Costa Brava beach towns, with a walled medieval old quarter that rises straight out of the sand, and this is its most family-focused hotel. Three pools including a shallow one with two short slides, a free kids club, an indoor pool for a rainy day, and a spa for the two hours when someone else is watching your children. Everything is a ten minute walk from the beach, but that walk is uphill on the way home.

Our verdict

The one to book if you want a resort week but also want your children to see a real Catalan town. Take a duplex, and take the beach in the morning.

🛏️

The rooms

Well kept family rooms and duplex suites, the duplexes putting the children upstairs and the parents down, which is worth every extra euro on night four. All rooms have a fridge, a safe and a balcony, and cots are free. Some family rooms are a single large space with a partition rather than a separate bedroom, so check the floor plan.

🗓️A day here with kids

  1. 8:00

    Breakfast at the low counter

Children serve themselves, which buys you a coffee sitting down.

  2. 9:30

    Down to Platja Gran

Shade under the walls until about eleven, sand toys essential.

  3. 14:00

    Kids club, spa hour

The one window in the week where you both get quiet.

  4. 17:00

    Slide pool

Emptier late, and the queue moves fast.

The only fortified medieval town left on the Catalan coast, with towers, a lighthouse and cobbles that go straight down to the sand.

Glass-bottom boat to the coves

Boats leave Tossa beach for the coves towards Lloret, stopping over seagrass where children can spot fish through the floor.

A small protected cove north of town with clear, shallow water and rock ledges full of small fish. Water shoes help, the entry is stony.

👶Great fit

Baby

0 to 1 yr

Free cots, a fridge in every room and a shaded lawn for pram naps. The hill into town is the one thing to plan around.

🧒Great fit

Toddler

1 to 3 yrs

The shallow pool is good, but the slides will be off limits until they hit the height mark, which causes tears. Warn them in advance.

🧑Great fit

Kid

4 to 11 yrs

The sweet spot: slides, kids club, mini disco, and a medieval castle to run around before bed.

🧑‍🎤Great fit

Teen

12 yrs and up

Kayak and snorkel rental on the beach, plus the coves along the coastal path, keep older ones interested for a few days.

Parents also ask

How tall do children need to be for the slides?

Around 1.20m, checked by the lifeguard. Under that, the shallow pool with its water jets is the substitute, so manage expectations before you arrive.

Is the walk to the beach hard with a pram?

It is about ten minutes down on pavement and a steady climb back. Manageable, but not something you will want to do four times a day in August heat.

Can children use the spa?

The indoor pool is open to families for part of the day, with adults-only hours in the afternoon. Saunas and treatments are adults only throughout.
