Cap Cana is the polished end of Punta Cana: gated, landscaped, fifteen minutes from the airport, and built around Juanillo, the prettiest beach on this coast. Hyatt Ziva is the family half of the complex (its sister Hyatt Zilara next door is adults only), and it does something unusual here. It gives children a free KidZ Club, a teen club with VR rigs, a water park with a lazy river and slides, and still feels like a hotel adults would choose on their own. The food is the best of any big family resort in the area. You pay for all that, and Juanillo does get sargassum, but the short transfer alone buys back half a holiday day.

Our verdict

The choice for families who want a proper hotel rather than a theme park with beds, and who value a fifteen minute transfer with a tired toddler. Best from December to March when the seaweed is at its lowest.

🛏️

The rooms

Large, calm, grown-up rooms with balconies and marble bathrooms, plus swim-up suites on the ground floor that open onto a shared pool. Family suites with two bedrooms exist but are limited, so book them early. Cots are free and connecting rooms are the usual workaround for a family of five.

Why families love it

  • Juanillo Beach, the best sand and calmest water on this coast

🗓️A day here with kids

  1. 8:00

    Breakfast on the terrace

The made-to-order station is quick before half past eight and impossible after nine.

  2. 9:30

Beach while the bay is flat

Juanillo is at its calmest in the morning and the cleaning crews have just finished.

  3. 12:00

Kids club drop-off, lunch for two

The club runs through lunch, which is the only reliable adult meal of the day.

  4. 15:00

    Water park and slides

Afternoons are hottest and the slide water is at its warmest. Reapply sunscreen, the shade is thin here.

  5. 18:30

    Sunset from the pier

Ten minutes, no queue, and it buys you a calm half hour before dinner.

  6. 19:30

Dinner at one of the a la carte restaurants

All included, none need a supplement, but the good slots go on the app days ahead.

Family things to do nearby

🌀

Lazy river before the sun bites

Open from mid morning and empty until eleven. Rings are free and there is a shallow entry that toddlers can manage holding a hand.

🐠

Snorkel off Juanillo

The rocky edge at the southern end of the bay holds small reef fish in waist-deep water, which is about as easy as first snorkelling gets.

Teen club VR hour

The teen club runs VR simulators, consoles and a pool table. It is the one place on the resort where a fourteen year old finds other fourteen year olds.

Is it right for your kids?

👶Great fit

Baby

0 to 1 yr

Free cots, quiet corridors and a calm bay to paddle in. Ask for a ground floor room away from the pool speakers.

🧒Great fit

Toddler

1 to 3 yrs

The shallow pool and the protected shoreline suit this age well. The main slides do not, so plan around the splash zone.

🧑Great fit

Kid

4 to 11 yrs

Free club, slides, lazy river and snorkelling off the beach. Plenty, without the sensory overload of a themed resort.

🧑‍🎤Great fit

Teen

12 yrs and up

One of the few resorts here that treats teenagers properly: a real club, watersports, and adults nearby who are not in fancy dress.

Parents also ask

How bad is the seaweed at Juanillo?

It varies year to year and week to week, and the worst months are April to August. The resort rakes the beach daily and the bay is long enough that one end is usually clear. December to March is the safest window.

Can we use the adults-only Hyatt Zilara next door?

Adults staying at the Ziva can normally use the Zilara restaurants and bars, but children cannot cross over. Check the current policy at booking, it has changed before.

Is the kids club really free?

Yes, the KidZ Club and the teen club are included in the rate, with no daily charge and no registration fee. Evening babysitting is separate and paid.

Do we need a car?

No. Everything is inside the resort and the airport transfer is fifteen minutes. If you want Scape Park, the Hoyo Azul cenote or a day in Bavaro, take a taxi rather than renting.
