Barcelo Bavaro Palace

The Barcelo is the most complete water offer on Bavaro Beach and the reason is a full-size wooden Spanish galleon sitting in the middle of a pirate-themed water park, with a wave pool beside it. Add the Barcy water park inside the pool complex for smaller children, the Barcy Kids Club with ball pits, consoles and a fenced outdoor playground, a bowling alley for a rainy hour, and four pools including a semi-Olympic one. The beach in front is classic Bavaro: wide, white, shallow and busy. The site is enormous, so pick your room location carefully or you will walk a kilometre before breakfast.

Our verdict
The best water-per-euro in Punta Cana. Take the Family Club upgrade, ask for a block near Pirates Island, and you have a week that keeps a five year old and a twelve year old equally happy.
The rooms
Standard rooms are large and comfortable, but the section that matters for families is the Family Club: 288 dedicated family suites with a microwave and a minibar stocked with juice, cereal and milk, which changes the shape of an early morning entirely. It is a paid upgrade over the standard rooms and, with children under six, it is the one worth taking.

🗓️A day here with kids
- 8:00
Cereal in the room, then a proper breakfast
The Family Club minibar buys you forty-five minutes before anyone has to be dressed.
- 9:30
Beach while the sand is cool
Bavaro sand gets genuinely too hot for bare feet by eleven. Take the flip flops.
- 12:30
Lunch at the beach grill
Faster and calmer than the main buffet, and you do not have to cross the site.
- 14:00
Kids club or bowling in the shade
The two hottest hours of the day, best spent under a roof.
- 16:00
Pirates Island as the crowds thin
Day groups leave and the galleon becomes almost private for the last stretch.
- 19:00
Early dinner, mini disco after
Book a la carte restaurants on arrival day, the good ones go within hours.
Family things to do nearby
Storm the galleon
The wooden ship at the centre of Pirates Island has slides, cannons and water jets. Children disappear into it for two hours and come back drenched.
Wave pool sets
The waves run on a timer with quiet intervals between. Use the calm gaps to get a nervous child into the shallow end first.
Bowling when the sun is too much
Air conditioned, on site and included. The obvious plan for the hour after lunch when nobody should be outside.
Bavaro shoreline walk
Head north along the sand and you reach El Cortecito in about forty minutes, with real shops, a fish market and cheaper ice cream.
Is it right for your kids?
Baby
0 to 1 yr
Free cots and a microwave in the Family Club rooms, which matters more than any brochure feature at this age. The pools have shaded shallow corners.
Toddler
1 to 3 yrs
The Barcy water park inside the pool complex is the right scale for this age: castles, low slides and waterfalls without the big rides.
Kid
4 to 11 yrs
The sweet spot. Galleon, slides, wave pool, club, bowling and a beach with football on it every evening.
Teen
12 yrs and up
Holds up better than most family resorts thanks to the wave pool, the big slides and the sports. There is a casino too, so expect questions.

Parents also ask
Is Pirates Island included?
Yes, entry is included for guests of the Barcelo Bavaro complex. Day visitors from other hotels pay, which is why it gets busy from mid morning.
Do we need the Family Club upgrade?
With children under six, yes: the microwave, the stocked minibar and the dedicated pool area are worth the difference. With teenagers, a standard room is fine.
How big is the resort really?
Big enough that a shuttle circulates. Ask for a block between the main pool and Pirates Island and you keep every daily walk under five minutes.
Are there vendors on the beach?
Bavaro is a public beach so yes, especially towards El Cortecito. A polite no is enough and the stretch directly in front of the hotel is calmer.

Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana
Large, calm, grown-up rooms with balconies and marble bathrooms, plus swim-up suites on the ground floor that open onto a shared pool. Family suites with two bedrooms exist but are limited, so book them early. Cots are free and connecting rooms are the usual workaround for a family of five.

Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana
Everything here is a suite, most of them big enough for four without anyone sleeping on a sofa, and many come with a swim-up terrace straight into a shared lagoon pool. The famous one is the Pineapple Villa, a two-bedroom, three-bathroom SpongeBob house for six with its own garden and infinity pool. Cots and bed rails are free, and orange Nickelodeon detailing runs through the lot.

Two worlds in one resort. The standard rooms are functional and starting to date, while the Tiara and Family Oasis sections are newer, roomier and worth the jump if there are four of you. Interconnecting family rooms are the standard family answer here, and cots are free in all categories.
