Hotel Sant Roc

Perched on the cliff above Calella de Palafrugell, this is the antidote to the resort strip: a family-owned hotel in a whitewashed fishing village of arched seafront houses and tiny coves. The terrace restaurant is genuinely good, the pool is small but faces the sea, and the whole place runs at a slower speed. It suits families who want long lunches and rock pools more than water slides.

Worth a look

Our verdict

Choose this if you want your children to remember a place rather than a pool. Bring water shoes, book a sea-facing family room, and eat on the terrace.

🛏️

The rooms

A family-run hotel where the rooms are unfussy but the balconies are the point: most look straight down onto the water. There are proper family rooms and a few with two separate sleeping areas, and a small number of connecting pairs. Cots are free, and reception will lend you a bottle warmer and a baby bath if you ask.

    Breakfast facing the water

Small buffet, good bread, and the boats going out.

  2. 10:00

    Down to Port Pelegri cove

Water shoes on, masks in the bag, shade until eleven.

Family things to do nearby

🚶

Cami de ronda to Llafranc

Twenty five minutes along the rocks, through tunnels cut in the cliff and past three coves, ending on Llafranc's sandy bay for an ice cream.

Is it right for your kids?

👶Works with a plan

Baby

0 to 1 yr

Cots, a bottle warmer and a baby bath on request, but the steps everywhere make this hard work with a pram. Consider a carrier instead.

🧒Great fit

Toddler

1 to 3 yrs

The coves are shallow and calm, which is ideal, but every one involves steps down and a carry back up.

🧑Great fit

Kid

4 to 11 yrs

Rock pools, snorkelling, tunnels on the coastal path and a village small enough to let them go two steps ahead.

🧑‍🎤Great fit

Teen

12 yrs and up

Kayak rental in the village and the whole coastal path to explore. No nightlife, which is either the point or the problem.

Parents also ask

Are the beaches sandy?

Partly. The coves mix coarse sand with pebbles and rock, which is beautiful but hard on bare feet. Water shoes solve it completely.

Is it too quiet for children?

There is no club, no slides and no mini disco. Children who like swimming, exploring and eating well thrive. Children who want a water park will be bored by day three.

Can we manage without a car?

Yes for the village, the coves and the walk to Llafranc. A car helps for Cap Roig, Begur and the Empuries ruins, and parking in Calella is genuinely difficult in August.
