Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana

The Hard Rock is the biggest, loudest, most teenager-proof resort on this coast. Rockaway Bay is a full water park with a wall of slides, there are thirteen pools, and Camp Woodward brings skate ramps, BMX, a foam pit and coaching to a beach holiday, which is genuinely unusual. Rooms are huge. The complications are equally real: there is a casino and a party atmosphere in parts of the resort, the site is vast and sprawling, timeshare sales staff will find you, and reviews of the water park's upkeep have been mixed in recent years. It is not the choice for a family with a baby, and it is close to unbeatable for a family with a fourteen year old.

Our verdict
The teenage answer. If your children are eight and up and the words skate park mean something in your house, book it and accept the casino. With a toddler, look elsewhere.
The rooms
Enormous rooms, all of them, with a two-person hot tub in the middle of the floor that children find hilarious and parents eventually use. Family suites take four to six. You can order a Fender guitar and an amp to the room at no charge, which is either the best or the worst idea of your holiday depending on the child.

🗓️A day here with kids
- 8:30
Breakfast, then book Woodward
Sessions are capped daily. The desk opens early and the good slots go first.
- 10:00
Rockaway Bay while it is fresh
Check the board at the entrance for which slides are running that day, it changes.
- 13:00
Lunch and the quiet pool
There are thirteen pools. Walk two minutes further and the music stops.
- 15:30
Beach or a second Woodward session
Afternoons at the skate park are quieter than mornings and the coaching is more one to one.
- 18:00
Room hour with the guitar
The rooms are big enough to genuinely spread out before dinner, which is rarer than it should be.
- 20:00
Dinner away from the casino wing
The restaurants near the lobby are the loudest. The ones by the gardens suit families better.
Family things to do nearby
Woodward session
Coached skate and BMX slots with a foam pit for landing practice. Book on arrival, sessions are capped and teenagers rebook every day once they have been.
Guitar in the room
The Sound of Your Stay programme lends you a Fender and an amp at no charge. Headphones exist for a reason, request those too.
Macao beach and the dunes
Public Macao beach nearby is where the surf schools and the buggy tours operate. Rougher water than Bavaro, but the setting is wilder and more photogenic.
Is it right for your kids?
Baby
0 to 1 yr
Not the right resort. The site is huge, the atmosphere is loud and there is no baby club. Choose Club Med or the Palladium instead.
Toddler
1 to 3 yrs
Workable but not ideal. The splash areas are fine, the distances are not, and the music around the main pools is loud for a nap schedule.
Kid
4 to 11 yrs
From about eight, Woodward and the big slides open up and this becomes one of the strongest choices on the coast.
Teen
12 yrs and up
The whole reason to book here. Skate park, big rides, guitars, sports and space to disappear for two hours without leaving the resort.

Parents also ask
Is the casino a problem with children around?
It is a separate, clearly signed adults-only area that you do not pass through to reach the family facilities. The nightclub is the same. Older children will notice both, so decide in advance what you want to say.
Is Camp Woodward included?
Basic access and the coached group sessions are included in the all-inclusive rate, with equipment provided. Some private coaching and specialist clinics cost extra. Book at the activities desk on arrival.
Are the water slides always open?
Not always. Rockaway Bay is big and slides rotate out for maintenance, which is the most common complaint about this resort. Check the board at the park entrance each morning.
How far is it from the airport?
About 30 to 40 minutes, north of Bavaro on the Macao side. Further than Cap Cana, closer than Uvero Alto.

Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana
Large, calm, grown-up rooms with balconies and marble bathrooms, plus swim-up suites on the ground floor that open onto a shared pool. Family suites with two bedrooms exist but are limited, so book them early. Cots are free and connecting rooms are the usual workaround for a family of five.

Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana
Everything here is a suite, most of them big enough for four without anyone sleeping on a sofa, and many come with a swim-up terrace straight into a shared lagoon pool. The famous one is the Pineapple Villa, a two-bedroom, three-bathroom SpongeBob house for six with its own garden and infinity pool. Cots and bed rails are free, and orange Nickelodeon detailing runs through the lot.

Barcelo Bavaro Palace
Standard rooms are large and comfortable, but the section that matters for families is the Family Club: 288 dedicated family suites with a microwave and a minibar stocked with juice, cereal and milk, which changes the shape of an early morning entirely. It is a paid upgrade over the standard rooms and, with children under six, it is the one worth taking.
