Perched on a pine-covered hill at the western tip of the island, the Skiathos Palace looks out over Koukounaries, the most famous sandy beach on Skiathos. It is a big, long-established hotel with a good-sized pool and a free shuttle down to Maratha and Koukounaries beaches, so it suits families who want a reliable, well-located base near the island's best sand without a luxury price tag.

Our verdict
The Skiathos Palace trades designer interiors for one of the best locations on the island: a pine hilltop above Koukounaries with a free shuttle to the sand. For families who care more about the beach and the view than the latest finishes, it is dependable value and the setting is hard to beat.
The rooms
A large hotel of around 258 rooms and suites, with family rooms and a family suite option that take four comfortably. Rooms are straightforward rather than designer, but many have balconies with sweeping views over the pines to Koukounaries bay, and cots are available on request, so the appeal here is the setting and the pool rather than cutting-edge interiors.

Parents also ask
How do we get down to the beach?
The hotel runs a free shuttle for guests down to Maratha and Koukounaries beaches, which are a few hundred metres below. You can walk, but with small children and beach gear most families use the shuttle, especially in the midday heat.
Is it suitable for toddlers?
Yes, with a few caveats: the pool and family rooms work well, and Koukounaries is soft, shallow sand, but the hilltop setting means more to-and-fro with a buggy. Cots are available on request, so confirm one when you book.
Is the hotel modern inside?
It is a large, long-established hotel, so interiors are comfortable and practical rather than cutting-edge. If you want the newest finishes you will pay more elsewhere; the Palace earns its keep on location, views and the pool.
Can we manage without a car here?
You can, as the beach shuttle and the south-coast bus cover the basics, but the far-west location makes a car handy for evenings in Skiathos Town and for reaching the quieter beaches along the coast.

Elivi Skiathos
Elivi spreads across several low-rise buildings and villas in the pines above Koukounaries and Banana beaches, and the family categories are genuinely generous: two-bedroom suites and villas, some with a private pool and a patch of garden, give parents a door to close on a sleeping baby. Cots and bed rails come free on request, and the larger villas comfortably take a family of four or five without anyone tripping over the buggy.

Rooms run from comfortable doubles to Deluxe Family Rooms with two separate sleeping areas, which is exactly what you want when a baby's bedtime does not match a seven-year-old's. Cots are free on request and the family categories give you the space and storage a week with children actually needs, with many rooms looking out over the garden or the bay.
