Petalon is the value pick on this list: a low-rise resort spread through pines on its own peninsula, ten minutes on foot from Vrsar harbour, with a big central pool and water slide, a separate children's pool and a free mini club for four to eleven year olds. Rooms are plain and the furniture has seen a few summers, which is exactly why the price is what it is. What you are buying is position and space: shaded paths, quiet bays, and one of the prettiest small harbours in Istria within walking distance of the room.

Our verdict
The one to book when the budget is the constraint and you would rather spend on boat trips than on the room. Take an apartment and cook breakfast.
The rooms
176 rooms and 48 apartments on a green peninsula. Standard, Superior and Family rooms all take four at a push, some connect through a door, and the apartments with a kitchen corner are the sensible pick for a longer stay.

Boats leave Vrsar harbour for the fjord-like inlet, with a fish lunch stop on most trips.

Life-size dinosaurs, a small train and playgrounds, five minutes down the coast.
Harbour evening
Watch the fishing boats come in, then pizza on the quay. Free and reliably popular.
Is it right for your kids?
Baby
0 to 1 yr
Workable with a cot and a kitchen corner, but there is no baby club and no baby pool worth the name.
Toddler
1 to 3 yrs
The shallow kids pool and flat shaded paths suit them, and the walk into town is pram friendly.
Kid
4 to 11 yrs
Mini club, water slide and boat trips from the harbour make this good value for six to eleven.
Teen
12 yrs and up
Not much organised for them, but bikes, paddleboards and the town within walking distance fill the gap.

Parents also ask
Is the mini club free?
Yes, the daily programme for ages four to eleven is included for resort guests. It runs in high season, so check the dates if you travel in May or October.
Should we take a room or an apartment?
An apartment if you are staying a week or have fussy eaters, a room if you want half board and less washing up. The price gap is small.
Is the naturist campsite an issue?
Koversada sits next along the coast and is clearly signposted. The resort and its beaches are not naturist, but it is worth knowing before you wander far along the shore path.
