Amarin was rebuilt as a family hotel rather than a hotel that tolerates families, and it shows in the details: a baby pool as well as a kids pool, a lazy river, a three-storey climbing net, an indoor cinema, and clubs split by age from babies up to teens. The catch is the location, four kilometres from Rovinj old town on a pine-covered peninsula, so the postcard views come from the boat rather than your balcony. The beach is pebble and rock like most of Istria. In August it fills completely and the buffet can feel like a school canteen.

If you are travelling with a baby or toddler, this is the Istrian hotel to beat. Ask for connecting rooms at booking, not on arrival.

276 rooms and four suites in eight layouts, from 28 to 74 square metres. A lot of them connect through a door, which is the single most useful thing here for a family of four or five, and rollaway beds are standard rather than a fight.

Are the kids clubs free?
The daily Ultramarine programme is included for hotel guests across all four age groups. Some specialist schools and equipment carry a small charge, so check at reception on arrival.
How do we get into Rovinj old town?
By seasonal boat from the hotel bay, by local bus, or by car in about ten minutes. The boat is much the nicest with children.
Is the beach sandy?
No. It is pebble and rock platforms with ladders into the sea, which is the Istrian norm. Water shoes make it perfectly comfortable.
