Girandella Resort, Valamar Collection

Girandella sits on a wooded hillside above Rabac bay, with the water an improbable shade of turquoise below. Valamar split the resort into zones, so the family hotel, the adults-only hotel and the suites each get their own pools and atmosphere, and families are not the ones asked to keep the noise down. Maro World is 1,500 square metres of indoor play, which is a lot of insurance against a bad-weather day. The catch is topography: the resort tumbles down a slope, and while lifts and shaded paths help, you will do more climbing than you expect with a pushchair.

Our verdict
The pick for a rain-proof family week with a proper beach underneath. Take the family hotel rooms on the lower terraces to cut the climbing.
The rooms
The family wing has rooms for four plus one with balconies, most facing the bay, plus larger Maro suites. Rooms are recent and well insulated, which matters because the resort runs late entertainment in summer.

Flat calm, shallow near the shore and clear enough to see your feet at chest depth.

Labin old town
Ten minutes uphill by car to a hilltop town with alleys, a small museum and big views.
Is it right for your kids?
Baby
0 to 1 yr
Cots and a family lounge for under-threes, but the slope and steps are the thing to plan around.
Toddler
1 to 3 yrs
Splash playground and shallow bay water suit them well, and Maro World covers the hot hours.
Kid
4 to 11 yrs
This is the age the resort is built for, with all-day club programmes and the beach right below.
Teen
12 yrs and up
Teen zone, watersports and paddleboards in the bay, though Rabac itself is quiet after dark.

Parents also ask
Is the all-inclusive worth it here?
Generally yes, because Rabac has few alternatives within walking distance and the resort food is good. If you plan day trips inland most days, half board works out better.
How far is the airport?
Pula is about an hour and fifteen minutes by car. Trieste and Ljubljana are two to two and a half hours, and Venice around three.
Is the resort hard work with a pushchair?
It is hilly. Lifts and ramps cover the main routes but not every shortcut, so ask for a lower-terrace room and expect some detours.
