This is the grown-up address on the Istrian coast, a five-star golf and spa resort perched above the sea at Crveni Vrh, with Slovenia and the Italian shoreline visible on a clear day. It changed hands from Kempinski to Minor Hotels and has been refurbishing in stages, so check what is open for your dates. For families it works best with school-age children: the rooms are big, the food is excellent, the pools are calm rather than boisterous, and the kids club runs only in season. The beach sits below the hotel and involves a walk or a shuttle each way.

Our verdict

For parents who want a properly good hotel and are happy to entertain their own kids. Take a suite, use the spa, and accept that the beach is a project.

🛏️

The rooms

Big, quiet, properly finished rooms and suites, most with a sea-facing balcony and a bathroom you will not fight over. Suites are the family option, with a separate living space and room for a cot without rearranging the furniture.

🗓️A day here with kids

  1. 8:30

    Breakfast on the sea terrace

Slow and unhurried, which is the point of staying here.

  2. 10:30

    Pool deck

Calm water, plenty of loungers, shade until midday.

  3. 14:00

    Down to the beach

Take the shuttle, the walk back up in full sun is no fun.

  4. 19:30

    Dinner and sunset

Book the earlier sitting if you have younger children.

Is it right for your kids?

👶Great fit

Baby

0 to 1 yr

Cots and quiet are easy here, but there is no baby club and the beach access is awkward with a pram.

🧒Great fit

Toddler

1 to 3 yrs

Fine, though the pools are calm-water style rather than splash zones, so bring your own entertainment.

🧑Great fit

Kid

4 to 11 yrs

Works well from about six, when they can swim, use the golf lessons and enjoy a day trip.

🧑‍🎤Great fit

Teen

12 yrs and up

The best fit here: spa access, golf, good food and a base for day trips into Slovenia and Italy.

Is this still the Kempinski?

The property is the same resort at Crveni Vrh but it left the Kempinski group and now trades under Minor Hotels. You may still see the old name on booking sites.

Is there a kids club?

There is a kids club but it opens seasonally and is not included in the rate. Confirm the dates and the cost before you count on it.

How far is the beach?

The private beach sits below the resort, around 350 metres away down the slope. There is a shuttle, and you will want it on the way back up.
