Moon Palace is a small city of a resort just south of Cancun's hotel zone, and its family trump card is the water park in the Grand section: slides, splash zones and a wave feature open to guests across the complex. Add the free Playroom kids club, a teens area, a Jack Nicklaus golf course and a beach that is calm and swimmable, and you have a place families can settle into for a week without ever leaving. It is more mainstream and less themed than the boutique addresses, which keeps prices sensible for the scale you get. The trade-off is size: it is genuinely huge, so first-timers should expect a lot of walking or shuttle-hopping and a day or two to learn the map.

Our verdict

For a big, do-everything family week close to the airport, Moon Palace is hard to beat on value, especially if you land the Grand section near the water park. Just go in knowing you are checking into a resort the size of a town.

🛏️

The rooms

Rooms are large and uniform across the Sunrise and Nizuc sections, most with a double whirlpool tub and a balcony, and connecting rooms are easy to secure for a family that wants two bathrooms. Superior Deluxe rooms take a family of four without a squeeze, and the Grand section adds the swankiest suites near the water park. Cots are free, and the resort credit system throws in spa and excursion money that families can spend on the kids' extras.

Parents also ask

Can everyone use the water park?

The main water park is in the Grand at Moon Palace section and is generally open to guests across the wider complex, though access details can vary by rate. Confirm at booking if the water park is your main reason for going.

Is the resort too big to manage with a toddler?

It is very large, but a free shuttle loops the property and there are pools everywhere, so you rarely have to go far. Booking near your key spots, the water park or the kids club, keeps daily distances short.

How far is the airport?

Moon Palace sits just south of the Cancun hotel zone, roughly 20 minutes from Cancun International, one of the shortest transfers on the coast.

Everything is a suite, most of them big enough for a family of four without anyone on a pull-out, and the swim-up Pads open straight onto a shared lagoon pool. The showpiece is the Pineapple Suite, the two-storey SpongeBob house that sleeps up to six with its own splash pool and a slide indoors. Cots and bed rails come free, bottle warmers and sterilisers are on request, and orange Nickelodeon detailing runs through the lot.

Suites are arranged in five themed Casas, each pinned to a different mood rather than an age, and many have a swim-up terrace or a plunge pool cut into the rock. Family suites sleep four to five comfortably and the layouts lean on connecting doors rather than sofa beds. Cots are free, and the eco-architecture means real greenery, underground rivers and birdsong outside the door rather than a concrete resort feel.

Rooms are modern and roomy, and the family-focused categories are the ones to book: Luxury Family Junior Suites with a bunk nook for the children and a separate zone for parents. Royalton's DreamBed and rain-shower touches feel a notch above the price, connecting options are plentiful, and cots come free. Swim-out rooms open onto a shared pool, which younger children love and which saves the daily trek to the water park.
