Gloria Palace Amadores Thalasso & Hotel

Gloria Palace Amadores is perched on a clifftop between the two calmest beaches in the south, Amadores and Puerto Rico, both reachable on a flat seafront promenade. The draw is the pair of heated infinity pools that seem to spill into the Atlantic, plus a children's pool, a small splash park, a playground and a free mini club for ages four to twelve with a teen club too. Parents get one of the island's best thalasso spas. The catch is the cliff setting, lovely to look at, a bit of a climb to live in.

Our verdict
Best for families who want calm beaches, knockout pool views and a real spa, and who do not mind a cliff that means a few lifts and slopes each day.
The rooms
Rooms are bright and many have a balcony over the bay. Family rooms sleep four, but the hotel is built into a cliff, so ask about the layout if you have a buggy or a child who tires on stairs.

Parents also ask
Is the hotel hard work with a buggy?
It is built into a cliff, so you use lifts and slopes to move between levels, beach and pools. Doable with a buggy, but not step-free everywhere.
Which beach is best for young children?
Amadores is man-made, sheltered and calm, which makes it one of the safest-feeling beaches in the south for little swimmers.
Can we use the thalasso spa with kids around?
The spa is an adult space, so it works best when the free kids club has the children for a couple of hours.

in Gran Canaria
Lopesan Baobab Resort
Rooms are dressed up as an African lodge, and the family rooms add a sofa bed so four sleep without anyone on the floor. Ask for a pool-view room on a lower floor if you have a toddler and a buggy, it saves the lift queue.

in Gran Canaria
Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Gran Canaria Mogan
Modern, spacious rooms, many with connecting doors, which is the easy fix for a family of four or five. Suites add real living space. Rooms feel newer and calmer than most of the south's older resorts.

in Gran Canaria
Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa
A colonial-style resort with rooms spread over huge grounds. Family rooms take four, and connecting doubles are worth asking for if you have older kids. The trade-off for all that garden is a proper walk from the far rooms to the pools.
