Dar Tantora The House Hotel

Dar Tantora is the most atmospheric stay in AlUla, a cluster of restored earthen houses threaded through the ancient lanes of the Old Town, named one of the world's greatest places by TIME in 2024. For families with school-age children and teens it is unforgettable: you sleep inside living heritage, wander straight out into the labyrinth of mudbrick alleys, and there is a beautiful infinity pool, a wellness centre and a lovely family-friendly restaurant. The honest caveat is that the romance comes with practical quirks for the very youngest: rooms are lit by candlelight rather than electric lights, the historic buildings have steps, thresholds and uneven floors, and it is a heritage house hotel, not a splash-park resort. Choose it for the sense of place, ideally with kids old enough to appreciate it.

Our verdict
The most magical stay in AlUla for families with kids old enough to soak up the history, wandering the Old Town lanes by day and swimming at a gorgeous pool. Think twice with a baby or new walker, given the candlelight and uneven heritage floors.
The rooms
Thirty restored mudbrick houses, or dars, woven into the lanes of AlUla Old Town, each one different and full of character, with some very spacious two-bedroom dars that suit a family. The rooms are candle-lit by design (no electric lighting inside) with hand-painted details and uneven heritage floors, which is magical for older children but genuinely worth thinking through with a crawling baby or an unsteady toddler.

Is it right for your kids?
Baby
0 to 1 yr
Hard to recommend for a baby: candle-lit rooms, uneven heritage floors, steps and no easy pushchair access make daily life awkward.
Toddler
1 to 3 yrs
Possible but needs care: the atmospheric dim lighting and thresholds mean constant supervision with an unsteady walker.
Kid
4 to 11 yrs
This is where Dar Tantora shines, with school-age kids captivated by sleeping inside a real historic town.
Teen
12 yrs and up
Teens love the sense of place, the photography and the pool; it feels special rather than childish.

Parents also ask
Are the rooms really only lit by candles?
Yes, the restored dars are candle-lit by design, with no electric lighting inside, which is part of the magic but genuinely dim. Bring a small torch or clip-on light for night-time trips with children.
Is it suitable for babies and toddlers?
It is best for kids old enough to enjoy the history. The candlelight, steps, thresholds and uneven heritage floors make it tricky with a crawling baby or new walker, so weigh that carefully.
Do the family rooms fit four?
Yes, there are very spacious two-bedroom dars that comfortably suit a family of four. As each house is different, ask for a two-bedroom dar specifically when you book.

Banyan Tree AlUla
Standalone tented villas spread along the canyon floor, from one bedroom up to a three-bedroom villa that sleeps a whole family in comfort, and most come with their own private pool and a fire pit outside. Cots and high chairs are provided on request, and because each villa is its own separate structure you get real space and quiet for a baby's nap rather than a thin hotel wall.

Our Habitas AlUla
A spread of freestanding villas among the palm groves, each with a private deck and canyon views, in Alcove, Canyon and Celestial styles that mostly hold a family of three to four. Children stay free in the parent's villa, cots come on request, and a handful of larger villas suit bigger families, so ask about the two-key or connecting options when you book.

Shaden Resort AlUla
A big range of chalet-style rooms and larger units, from standard doubles up to family rooms and a six-bedroom Royal Suite, with some rooms offering their own private pool.
