Canary Islands vs the Balearics for families in 2027

This is the great Spanish face-off: the Canaries, the Atlantic and sun you can count on even in January, versus the Balearics, the Med and a two-hour flight. For a family, the right answer mostly comes down to the season and the ages.

The Canaries win winter, hands down. From November to March they are the only part of Spain where you actually swim, 21 degrees on Tenerife or Fuerteventura while the mainland freezes. The resorts are big, often with a water park, and built to run all year. The trade-offs: a longer flight (four hours plus), and an ocean that can carry some surf, worth watching with toddlers.

The Balearics win summer and closeness. Two hours in the air, a calm warm sea from June to September, and above all the Alcudia bays on Mallorca, flat and sandy, unbeatable for the paddling age. This is the short, easy trip, when you would rather not spend half a day on a plane with a baby.

Our simple rule: winter or guaranteed sun, go Canaries. Summer, a toddler beach, a short flight, go Balearics. Below, four scored resorts on each side, to compare side by side.
