Mallorca is the safe bet you almost hesitate to recommend for fear of stating the obvious. And yet it earns the reputation: two hours in the air from most of western Europe, a north coast of flat sandy bays built for small children, and enough good resorts that prices stay sensible. For a family week that simply works, without the fuss, it is very hard to beat.

Where on the island should a family stay?

Match the resort area to the age of your children and the kind of evenings you want.

• North (Alcudia, Playa de Muro): the family heartland. A shallow sea you can stand up in for dozens of metres, sand as far as you can see, and hotels built around exactly that. Best for babies, toddlers and young kids.
• Southwest (Palmanova, Santa Ponsa, Portals): livelier, with restaurants and a promenade a short walk away. Suits families who like a bit of life nearby, and older kids or teens.
• East (Cala d'Or, Cala Millor): pretty coves and calmer resorts, good if you want a quieter base.

One rule holds everywhere: steer clear of the well-known party strips (parts of Magaluf and El Arenal) if your evenings matter to you.

When is the best time to go with kids?

Mallorca has a long, gentle season. Sea temperatures climb from around 18 to 20°C in May to a warm 25 to 26°C by August and September.

• June and September are the sweet spot for families: air around 26 to 29°C, warm sea, smaller crowds and softer prices.
• July and August are hottest (often 30°C plus) and busiest, but the north coast stays breezy.
• May and October are lovely for toddlers and babies who wilt in real heat, though the sea is cooler and some resorts wind down in late October.

Mallorca is a summer destination: it does not offer reliable winter beach sun the way the Canaries do.

How much should a family budget?

Because supply is so deep, there is a resort at almost every price point.

All-inclusive is popular in the big northern resorts and takes the daily maths out of a week with young kids. Half-board with a self-catering fallback often works better for families who like to wander out for lunch or an early evening ice cream.

Is there enough to do beyond the pool?

Yes, and that is part of Mallorca's appeal: you can break the pool routine without it turning into an expedition. The vintage wooden train from Palma to Soller is a genuine highlight for kids, the Caves of Drach and Palma Aquarium fill a hot afternoon, and a short boat trip to a cove makes an easy morning. Palma itself is walkable and family-friendly for a half-day.

Mallorca or the Canaries?

Both are Spanish and both do family holidays brilliantly, but they answer different questions.

• Mallorca wins on flight time (about two hours), the little excursions, and that summer sweet spot of June and September.
• The Canaries (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote) win in winter, when they stay warm and Mallorca does not.

For a July or August week close to home, Mallorca is the more relaxed choice. For February half-term sun, look to the Canaries.
