Astir is the grande dame of Paros, a low, elegant garden resort on the waterfront at Kolymbithres, whose sheltered coves of sculpted rock hold some of the calmest, shallowest water on the island. There is a big pool with a separate children's pool and a hot tub, gardens to roam, babysitting on request and a private beach where the sea is glassy and gentle. It is grown-up and refined rather than a bells-and-whistles kids resort, but for families with a toddler who want calm water and space, it is lovely.

Our verdict
For calm, shallow water and grown-up elegance, Astir wins: the Kolymbithres coves are toddler heaven and there is a kids' pool and babysitting to boot. A refined choice, not a rowdy one.
The rooms
Elegant double rooms, junior suites and executive suites in low garden buildings, most with a terrace or balcony facing the sea or the grounds. Suites give a family room to spread out, and babysitting can be arranged.

Parents also ask
Why is Kolymbithres good for babies?
Its bays are broken up by smooth granite rocks that shelter the water, so it stays flat, warm and shallow in little pockets, which is ideal for a baby's first paddles even when the wind is up elsewhere.
Is there childcare?
There is no free kids club, but the hotel arranges babysitting on request, which lets parents enjoy the restaurant or the spa for an evening.
