Breezes is the family favourite that still feels personal, a mid-size resort on the quiet southeast coast run with genuine warmth. Deluxe Rooms take up to two children under twelve free when sharing with parents, and there are larger rooms and family arrangements with extra beds. Spread over ten hectares of gardens at the northern tip of the island, Hideaway has a wide choice of rooms, and families are well served. The larger 90 sqm suites sleep three or four with a big sofa bed in the living room, and several categories add a private pool. Cots come free on request, and ground-level garden rooms keep a pushchair easy. Ask for a room near the 50 metre pool and its separate children's pool rather than a far garden corner.

Melia spans a huge, leafy estate above a long Kiwengwa beach, with a room range that runs from Garden Rooms to one, two and three-bedroom villas, many with a private pool. For families the villas are the star: masses of space, an enclosed garden and a pool of your own where a toddler can splash safely. Cots and highchairs are provided, and the main pool has a shallow children's section. Note that the adults-only areas, The Level and the spa pool, are for guests 16 and over.

Park Hyatt Zanzibar
Right on the Stone Town seafront, Park Hyatt has generous rooms and suites, several of which connect or take an extra bed for a child. Cots and highchairs come on request and there are some child-friendly menu choices. There is no kids club, but this is the rare Stone Town hotel with a real pool and a bit of beach, so it works as a comfortable one or two-night city base at the start or end of a beach trip rather than a week-long family resort.
